Deep Purple a Handful

The Evan Williams trained Deep Purple has extended his unbeaten run to five following his victory in the grade 2 Mitie Kennel Gate Novices' Hurdle at Ascot on Friday. Originally trained by Marcus Tregoning and then by Andrew Balding, who could not do anything with him, his owner Paul Green, sent him to Evan and the Welsh trainer is now getting him to fullfil his potential over obstacles.

Deep Purple was along way from being the best of these on the Flat but he deteriorated after his debut win and ended rated just 75. He came to Ascot unbeaten in four runs over hurdles and he maintained his 100 per cent record with another gutsy front-running performance. He faced a stiff challenge from Sir Harry Ormesher on the home turn but was back on top two out and kept on pretty well, despite jumping the last awkwardly.

The Tolworth Hurdle could come next, and he is now 33-1 with Totesport and VCbet for the Supreme Novices'. However, he is so highly regarded he will also get a Champion Hurdle entry. Interestingly, despite his front-running wins, Evan Williams reckons he will be best tucked in off a strong pace, which he would certainly get in the Supreme Novices'.
