Hardy Eustace for the AIG Hurdle
Hardy Eustace will head next to Leopardstown for the AIG Hurdle which is a surprising move as this is over the minimum distance. This looked like connections have not yet fully decided that the Ladbroke World Hurdle is the preferred route for the Cheltenham Festival. The dual Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace finished in second place in the Long Walk Hurdle just before Christmas and he was trying this trip for the first time. Hardy who usally runs in headgear went without in this race as they obviously wanted him to settle in order to get the distance.
While he got the better of a battle with market rival Black Jack Ketchum coming off the home turn he could not peg back the front runner Lough Derg. Jockey Conor O'Dwyer admitted afterwards that if he rode the race again he would have keep closer tabs on the leader and connections were satisfied he stayed, which gives them the option of going for the World Hurdle rather than a fifth crack at the Champion.
