Barker set for County Hurdle
Barker set for the County Hurdle following his victory in the Pierse Hurdle at Leopardstown last weekend. Barker the 10/1 winner jumped like a stag and his future will be over the larger fences next season. His trainer James Barrett who is only in his first year as a trainer, having spent time at the Charlie Mann yard in Lambourn thinks that the County Hurdle is the right race for him at the festival as Timmy Murphy indicated that the furious pace of that race will suit him. Barrett also believes that the better ground will suit his horse even better. This was Barker's third successive victory that reflects great credit on his young trainer James Barrett. His first win this season came in a small handicap at Clonmel. However, a follow-up win at Fairyhouse had marked him down as one of the more progressive horses in a contest that tends to be won by an improver rather than by a more established performer. The trainer was concerned about the ground, but their was little to be worried about the way he came home up the Leopardstown straight.
