Tony McCoy gets it wrong not very often but yesterday he had the choice between the two JP McManus runners Captain Cee Bee and Binocular. He was going to ride Captain Cee Bee but after rain he switched to Binocular and well you know the rest! There is a lesson to all punters here in that once you make your mind up stick to your guns. Captain Cee Bee was in the end ridden by Robert Thornton who had a great start to the festival having two winners on the day and is in pole position to retain his Cheltenham festival top jockey award which he won last year.
In the race Captian Cee Bee was held up in rear early and got into it down the hill on the heels of Binocular, the two McManus runners went to the front coming into the straight. At the last hurdle the winner Captain Cee Bee wasn't as good as Binocular over it, but he was the stronger of the pair up the hill and won convincingly enough in the end.
McCoy must have been happy with his decision most of the way, for Binocular, who was Listed-placed on the Flat and was unbeaten in two juvenile hurdles, travelled well and jumped well despite his inexperience, and he was going strongly on the outer coming down the hill. He was clear second-best and should have a bright future, as he has good Flat speed and still has youth on his side.
