Cloudy Lane Grand National Drifter

While Cloudy Lane is a Grand National drifter in the market the 2008 Grand National boasts one of the shortest favourites in recent memory from the stables that produced the race’s most famous winner Red Rum. With thee wins and two second place finishes in five years between 1973 and 1977, Red Rum’s legacy makes the McCain stable the one to watch at Aintree and their entry Cloudy Lane has been touted as the hottest favourite for some time.

There is much in his favour, his starting weight of 10st 11lb is well below what he would carry under his current rating, having finished first in his last three outings and his pedigree is undisputed. There are drawbacks, however, Cloudy Lane has never completed a four-mile and four-furlong race and the Grand National is notorious for its unpredictability – Cloudy Lane could easily be brought down by another horse’s error but such are the risks for any choice.

With nothing ever guaranteed in the Grand National, Cloudy Lane ’s relatively short odds may seem off-putting but his recent form seems to justify the hype as he is 20lbs in at the weights, but he is on the drift as there is a lot of good money for some of his main rivals.
