The Neptune Collongues Cheltenham Gold Cup odds for 2009 are 14/1 and may represent a really good ante post wager. Neptune Collongues finished last season with a top performance at Punchestown where he won the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup and this was done in some style to make it two from two in the race. He was only just beaten into third place in the 2008 Gold Cup by Kauto Star and in all was only beaten seven odd lengths by Denman. Neptune Collongues almost matched Denman last year in the race and he has to be value to be an each way punt for next years feature.
In the Punchestown Gold Cup Ruby Walsh rode him to perfection and exerted his class on the approach to the fourth last fence and the writing was on the wall thereafter. It remains a quite extraordinary fact that Neptune Collonges is only the third best staying chaser in the Nicholls yard as he is one of the best staying chasers to have raced in recent seasons.
The mark he posted when a running on third in the Gold Cup was superior to that given to very many Gold Cup winners, and that reflects the enormous improvement the French-bred has found last season term. Only seven, he is around a stone better this season than he was last season, and given that he will still be a young horse when he starts out next winter, there is every chance that he will get even better.
