One should always take note of a Pipe horse making its' debut for the stable especially in big races and French import Piraya is set to run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup this Saturday. Piraya, joined David Pipe’s stable following his latest run at Auteuil on June 25, having been purchased by one of the yard’s long-standing patrons Terry Neill. The five-year-old had previously raced for trainer Arnaud Chaille-Chaille for whom he made a winning career debut in a maiden hurdle at Bordeaux Le Bouscat on February 11, 200.
The grey rattled off a quick hat-trick with triumphs at Angers and Auteuil, the latter victory coming in a two-mile chase on March 25 of that year. His first defeat came over an extended two and a half miles at the same course next time when second to Aviodor on May 6, but Piraya returned to the winner’s enclosure over the course and distance on September 4. The gelding landed the biggest triumph of his career 15 days later at Auteuil when capturing the Grade Three Prix Edmond Barrachin.
A close third in the Grade Three Prix Orcada followed on October 14, after which he was rested. Piraya returned over hurdles at the Paris track in April, finishing third to City Note. Kept to the smaller obstacles at Angers in May, Piraya managed fourth. His latest start came over fences in the two and three quarter-mile Prix Rigoletto at Auteuil, which resulted in him taking a tumble.
David Pipe says: "He is an exciting horse who is doing some nice work at home. His best form has been at around two and half miles so it makes sense to start him off in the Paddy Power Gold Cup."
