An excellent front running performance by the Sheena West trained Golan Way earned him a deserved win in the Sharp Novices Hurdle (grade 2) at the Cheltenham Open Meeting on 14th November. It also extended his unbeaten run to four races
He won at odds of 8/1 against a quality field that included American Trilogy one of the pre race favourites for the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March. It was a gritty, game and thoroughly deserved win by a horse who Sheena West said was bought cheaply and does not show any great form at home. She also said that when she bought him, she never expected him to win a race at all, let alone four on the trot and with one at Cheltenham.
Golan Way in fact was beautifully ridden by Jamie Goldstein who was riding his first winner at the Prestbury Park course. He jumped superbly throughout and the tactic of stealing a march on the field paid off, he had plenty of highly regarded horses struggling well before the end and he tackled the Cheltenham hill with a determined aplomb.
It will be interesting to see what mark he is given by the handicapper, but on this performance it must be around the 135 mark. This is not a mark that would win the Supreme Novices Hurdle, but he has earned quotes of 25/1 with Skybet for the race and he will have at least a couple of more runs between now and then.
