The triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner missed the chance to defend his crown at the Festival last March after breaking a blood vessel on the gallops. But the 10-year-old is back in terrific heart and being primed to take on all-comers in what has the makings of the most fascinating three-mile contest in years.
The Betfair Chase at Haydock Park on November 19 is the first part of an exciting initiative called the North West Masters.Day two, 24 hours later, sees the scene switch to Aintree, where the programme will include two races over the Grand National fences - the Grand Sefton Chase and the tote-sport Becher Chase. And, to make the Haydock showpiece even more enticing, its sponsors have come up with the Betfair Million, a seven-figure bonus offered by the betting exchange to any horse that lands their inaugural contest, plus the King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Haydock race carries a prize fund of £150,000, which seems certain to attract star performers like this year's Gold Cup winner, Kicking King, course specialist Lord Transcend, talented stayer Grey Abbey, Irish ace Beef Or Salmon and up and coming sorts in the mould of Trabolgan, Ashley Brook and War Of Attrition.
The biggest question mark, however, hangs over Best Mate, who looked the proverbial million dollars during yesterday's press launch at Knight's base near Wantage. His trainer insists the gelding is in great form but accepts that until he actually races no-one will know whether he is the same horse to have won 14 times, and never been out of the first two in 21 starts. She said: "We went back to mother nature with him after he broke the blood vessel. He has been out in the fresh air every afternoon and we didn't put a saddle on him from that day until mid-June.
