The Irish got off to a winning start at the 2009 Festival when the Noel Meade trained Go Native held off a strong challenge from Medermit to win the Supreme Novices Hurdle. It was a fascinating race that went off at a great pace, with Golan Way leading the way, but with two hurdles from home, winning jockey Phillip Carberry took up the running with Go Native who looked every bit the winner from then on.
He did idle a touch at the end of the race, allowing Robert Thornton on Medermit to close towards the end however his determined effort to pick off the winner was not enough with Go Native going on again to win by a neck. Third home was Somersby.
Cousin Vinny who went off as the 9-4 favourite ran with the leaders but he could not find the speed at the end of the race finishing disappointingly for favourite backers in fifth place.
