The David Nicholson Mares Hurdle was first introduced to the Cheltenham Festival in 2008 but it has already become a staple on the day 1 card and looks set for another exciting renewal in 2010. Its an excellent chance for the mares to race against each other with only those aged four and above eligible to enter the race which will be the final race on Tuesday at the Festival. The entry list for the 2010 race is looking high quality as the reputation for this one looks set to further be enhanced.
The main interest on the race is focused around the 2009 winner Quevega, she won really well at the Cheltenham Festival last season and is being well backed to do the same one again in 2010. The Willie Mullins trained horse is all the rage despite not appearing this season which makes it hard to gauge the value of her being the favourite. Ruby Walsh is likely to take the ride on board once again and if she can put her best foot forward then she will be difficult to beat in the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle. Her main competition in the betting looks set to be the excellent looking mare Voler La Vedette who has attracted plenty of backing in recent weeks. She has won three on the bounce this season including a win over Champion Hurdle favourite Go Native in November, there was talk of a Champion Hurdle run but the David Nicholson is the preferred choice and that looks a good decision. She looks the real deal on current form and will push Quevega very close on the day if she produces the run many believe she is capable of.
Their are of course other talented looking mares in the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle Odds who will be looking to upset the betting and get in amongst the top two backed horses. No One Tells Me is a horse that has been beaten by Voler La Vedette twice this season but still looks capable of being in the mix-up with all things being well. She is a talented mare with genuine each/way claims at the Cheltenham Festival but may struggle to mix it with the top two mentioned horses. The same can be said of the second Willie Mullins horse Morning Supreme, she has looked good this season having won both her starts and has to have good claims here. She is lightly raced and may be improving which means she should be a dangerous mare with good chances in this competitive looking race. Assuming Ruby Walsh picks Quevega over Morning Supreme then we can assume that Morning Supreme is the second string for Mullins but nevertheless she should not be ruled out.
