Richard Johnson claimed his third 2003 Cheltenham Festival winner aboard the former Racing Post Chase winner Young Spartacus in a slightly lucky fashion. Until Goguenard unseated his rider two fences from home, the contest was wide open. With the demise of his main challenger, Young Spartacus pulled away from Fondmort in the final furlong to win his first race following a twelve month absence from the racing track. Fondmort put in a gutsy performance but a slight mistake at the last put paid to any serious challenge. Third was taken by Scots Grey and Cregg House stayed on well to take the fourth and final placing.
