Queen Mother Champion Chase

The feature race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival is the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Traditionally the race has fewer entrants than the other grade one Cheltenham events but that doesn't mean the quality of the racing suffers in anyway shape or form. In recent years the Cheltenham Betting market leaders have performed well and winners at big prices are uncommon.

Tamarinblue took them along with Schindlers Hunt at a furious pace. At an early stage Master Minded looked to be going easily with Voy Por Ustedes right up alongside, but Master Minded cruised to the front with Voy Por trying to get on terms but he chased in vein and he won this in a hack canter, Ruby chose right and this is a star for the future and won by a good 15 lengths.

1. Master Minded (R Walsh) 3/1
2. Voy Por Ustedes (Robert Thornton) 5/2 Fav
3. Fair Along (R Johnston) 12/1

Kauto Star was the talking horse in the build up to this race and it is a shame we did not get to see him run his race as his race ended at the third fence. Moscow Flyer was trying to win back to back Queen Mothers but he was never himself all season and he now goes into retirement. This paved the way for a new champ and Newmill took his cue and was a very good winner of this renewal and could be a force in future Cheltenham Festival Races.

1. Newmill (Andrew J McNamara) 16-1
2. Fota Island (AP McCoy) 4-1
3. Mister McGoldrick (D Elsworth) 50-1

Built as the race of the Festival, just as Moscow Flyer had departed the prior year, this time it was the turn of Azertyuiop to make a bad error at the water and as such deprive us of the head to head coming over the last. In the end it was a facile win for the brilliant Moscow Flyer and as hard as Well Chief tried he could not get close to the former Champion chase winner.

1st 5 Moscow Flyer (B Geraghty) 6/4 F
2nd 8 Well Chief (TJ Murphy) 7/2
3rd 1 Azertyuiop (R Walsh) 2/1

Queen Mother Chase 2004 Results

Azertyuiop put in a superb performance to take the Queen Mother Champion Chase after the favourite Moscow Flyer fell with four fences to go.

A true championship event, with two outstanding two-miler chaser in the line-up, and they went a good pace too, but there was a terrible sense of anti-climax when Moscow Flyer departed before things got serious this leave us in the dark as to which of the pair would have come out on top. The former champion had matched his rival up to that point and still looked full of running, close up in third on the outside, when he went. It was a sweet victory for jockey Ruby Walsh and trainer Paul Nicholls after finishing second to Moscow Flyer at Sandown in December.

Queen Mother Chase 2003 Results

The 2003 Queen Mother Champion Chase was taken by the Irish entry Moscow Flyer in an extremely fast time, albeit in maybe slightly lucky circumstances. At two fences out his nearest challengers Latalomne and Seebald fell leaving Moscow Flyer clear of the field for the final couple of furlongs of the Cheltenham Racecourse. As in 2002 Latalomne looked to be travelling well until unseating his rider and maybe with a little more experience he could well be the main danger in 2004. Native Upmanship and Cenkos occupied the placed positions rather fortunately, neither had been in position to challenge the front three until Latalomne and Seebald fell.
