Champion Hurdle Results

The Champion Hurdle was of course the feature race on day one of the Festival and all the talk was about hot favourite and defending champion Hurricane Fly. There was a top class ten runner field and as expected it was Overturn who took up the early pace for Jason Maguire while Celestial Halo was also handy in the early stages. Binocular and Hurricane Fly were both held up towards the back of the field.

Overturn continued to set a strong gallop with the field strung well out but most of the field were travelling well as they got to the top of the hill. Rock On Ruby was showing well as were Binocualr and Hurricane Fly who were starting to make progress through the field. It was Rock On Ruby though who hit the front from Overturn at the last with Hurricane Fly looking beaten to the delight of the bookmakers. Rock On Ruby was given a great ride by Noel Fehily and he stormed up the hill to hold off a brilliant run from Overturn and Hurricane Fly who was back in third place. It is the first champion Hurdle win for trainer Paul Nicholls.
