The next race was the big one, the 2012 version of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the anticipation was tangible before the race. All the talk was about whether or not the 12-year-old Kauto Star could win the race again or if the favourite Long Run could win for the second successive year. There was a massive roar as the tapes went up and to no ones surprise it was Midnight Chase who was out front with Kauto Star also very handy on in the early stages. What A Friend was an early faller. Kauto Star was struggling early on and he was pulled upon the first circuit to a massive round of applause from the stand.
As they went into the second circuit it was Midnight Chase and Time For Rupert who were in front and going well while Long Run was nicely in behind them and looking very good. At the top of the hill it was still Midnight Chase and Time for Rupert at the front but Long Run was right there for punters while Synchronised was starting to stay on.Time For Rupert was in front two out but The Giant Bolster and Long Run were looking very dangerous indeed. It was The Giant Bolster who was leadign at the last with Long Run and Synchronised who was staying on brilliantly the further they went. AP McCoy was at work on Synchronised and the horse duly responded by storming up the hill to beat a one paced Long Run and The Giant Bolster who ran a stormer.
A special mention should go to Kauto Star who was pulled up early on by Ruby Walsh when he was clearly not right and that might be his last run at the Festival.
