The next race was the big one and the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it looked an open race with three previous winners in the field as well as Long Run who went into the race on an upward curve and the favourite to win the race. There was an almighty roar as the tapes went up on the biggest race of the season and there was no surprise to see the front runner Midnight Chase take the lead and he was clearly trying to set a good clip while Kauto Star and Imperial Commander were both prominent as they entered the final circuit.

As they came to the top of the hill Denman, Kauto Star and Long Run emerged as the three leaders and all three were travelling well with Imperial Commander struggling and he quickly slipped out of contention. There was a huge roar as Kauto Star and Denman took the second last in front but Long Run looked to be going the best and he took the lead going to the last in what was a classic Gold Cup tussle. Long Run had youth on his side and he bounded up the hill to win the Gold Cup for the first time while Denman ran a blinder at 11 to claim a brilliant second place ahead of Kauto Star and the impressive What A Friend who ran to a career best.
