The Mares race is always a popular one with racing fans and once again all eyes were on the brilliant Quevega who went off as a hot favourite to claim a remarkable fourth successive win in the race. The leader in the early stages of the race was Dorabelle with Himayna also being ridden handily, there was a slow pace early on with Quevega held up in mid field.
The early pace was very slow with the field bunching up on the back straight with any number of horses within touching distance of the lead. It was Dorabelle who remained in the lead at the top of the hill with a number of horses packed in behind him with Quevega still in mid field for favourite backers. Quevega was cruising behind the front four or five and he duly hacked into the lead at the last and stretched clear of the field with any number of horses way back and fighting for the minor places. No other mare was in the winner's class, Kentford Grey Lady claimed second ahead of Golden Sunbird.
