There were 24 runners going to post for the Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle, Sanctuaire for Paul Nicholls was the favourite going down to post and he was hoping to give the Champion Trainer his first victory of the Festival. The early leaders were Hunterview and Rip Tide who were looking to take them along at a swift pace on the first circuit and a half.
Both of the early leaders faded to leave Kudu Country and Notus De La Tour at the front with Sanctuaire weaving his way through the field and looking dangerous. As them came to the last it was Ruby Walsh on board Sanctuaire who stole the lead and never looked back as he stormed up the hill to leave the field trailing in his wake, the win meant Ruby Walsh became the winning most jockey in the history of the Cheltenham Festival. Notus De La Tour held on for second place while Orsippus came home in third place at a good price.
