Barry Geraghty took a step closer landing the 2003 Cheltenham leading jockey title with his fourth success of the meeting on Spectroscope. In a tightly run race the 20/1 shot Spectroscope fought off several late challenges and crossed the line only a short head before Well Chief. Coming to Cheltenham with winning form had elevated Well Chief into a strong position within the betting market and despite a fine performance the ground was slightly against his liking. The third place was taken by the 11/2 favourite Golden Cross who despite a slow start was the strongest finishing horse in the final furlong and with slightly softer ground would have been a great deal nearer to the winner.
