The first race on Gold Cup day was the excellent JCB Triumph Hurdle and it was promising to be one of the most competitive of the week with a number of horses being backed in the ring, the one for the money before the off was Sam Winner who started the favourite. The start was greeted with a massive roar and the early pace was set by Sailors Warn with the field going a fast clip as you expect.
The bulk of the field were tightly packed as they came to the top of the hill with Sailors Warn still at the head of the filed while Molotof was also prominent and looked in good shape, Sam Winner looked to be struggling though out the back. As they came down to the last fence it was Zarkandar who showed a brilliant turn of foot to cruise to the front and he landed in front of Unaccompanied and simply bolted up on just his second start in Britain over hurdles to claim the win. Grandouet ran well to claim third from a fast finishing Sam Winner who was never travelling but stayed on to pass several horse up the hill, but it was Zarkandar who stole the show.
