The Jewson Novices Handicap went to tape with 20 runners and was headed in the betting by favourite Kia Kaha. It was pancake who was happy to set the early pace but he faded back to the pack when the pace was upped.
It was Crescent Island who burst away from the pack with two to go but Chapoturgeon was in hot pursuit. Crescent Island gave his all but tied up while Chapoturgeon sailed over the last and sprinted clear to win the Jewson Novices. Isnt That Lucky stayed well and came past Crescent Island to claim second with Northen Alliance in fourth place.
