The RSA Chase was one of the most highly anticipated races of the day and the question was could hot favourite Grands Crus justify the hype and claim the win for the trainer David Pipe. Only nine runners went to post and the early front runner was Mr Moonshine with Join Together also being ridden towards the front by Ruby Walsh, Grands Crus was held up at the back. First Lieutenant joined the front runners as they went into the second circuit with Join Together close by.

As they came to the top of the hill it was First Lieutenant who was at the front after running freely but any number of horse were still in with a shout close behind. Bobs Worth came to challenge the leader with Grands Crus looking dangerous just in behind and Walkon also running well. Bobs Worth and First Lieutenant came to the last together after Grands Crus emptied out of it to the delight of the bookmakers. Bobs Worth found a bit more up the hill to claim the win for Henderson and Geraghty while first Lieutenant may have paid the price for running too free early on.
