The RSA Chase is run with its current title for just the second year in 2011 although is backed by one of Cheltenham’s longest-running sponsors. It was run as the Royal & SunAlliance Chase up to 2009 and as the Royal SunAlliance Chase in 1997.
Sun Alliance, which merged with Royal Insurance in 1996, previously backed the Sun Alliance Chase for 23 years and sponsored at Cheltenham for 26 years altogether. From 1971-73, the Foxhunter Chase was titled the Sun Alliance & London Foxhunters.
Fred Winter had the best record in the contest, having landed three victories with Killiney (1973), Pengrail (1975) and Brown Chamberlin (1982).
Among current trainers Willie Mullins heads the bunch with three winners and Paul Nicholls has won the race twice, Mullins having sent out Rule Supreme (2004) and Florida Pearl (1998) and Cooldine in (2009) while Nicholls has trained two of the past few winners – Star De Mohaison (2006) and Denman (2007).
The longest-priced winners since 1964 are Hussard Collonges in 2002 and Canny Danny in 1983, both at 33/1, with Arkle the shortest-priced at 4/9 in 1963. Irish-trained winners number eight since 1964, the latest being Rule Supreme in 2004.
The competitors who line up for the Sun Alliance Novices Chase are all coming to the end of their first season over fences and potentially a stepping stone to greatness and this is very much emphasised by Denman the 2007 Royal & Sun Alliance Winner.
Cheltenham Festival Form can therefore be a little misleading with many entrants having only ran a couple of times in that season. The 2008 winner in Albertas Run was only having his second run in the season and came to the Festival a fresh horse and showed his quality on the day.
The RSA Chase is run over three miles in length it is not an easy trip for the novices and shocks can be a feature of this event, however up to two years ago only one favourite won this race in the previous seven years. However in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009 the punters got their revenge on the bookies with the now infamous Denman won it in 2007 and Albertas Run also a favourite won it in 2008 and Cooldine in 2009.
The bookmakers will be putting up the odds for this race early in the 2011/12 season and we shall be updating our odds tables as soon as this happens

The best suggestion is to look for the more experienced horses in making your selection and one race to consider as a good form guide is the Reynoldstown Chase, run earlier in the National Hunt Racing calendar.
