The Greatwood Hurdle is the first of the major Champion Hurdle trials each season and it gives punters their first chance to see some of the contenders for the big race itself. The Greatwood Hurdle is run over the same course and distance as the Champion Hurdle so any form during this race is always good form and punters should be quick to take note of the race. The Greatwood is part of the excellent open Meeting at Cheltenham which was is one of the highlights during the early part of the jumps season in the UK.
The Greatwood Hurdle is slightly different to most of the trial races as it is a handicap race at Grade 3 lavel and that must be taken into account by punters who are looking to carry that form to the Champion Hurdle. Recent winners of the Greatwood Hurdle include excellent horses like Menorah and Rooster Booster who won in 2002 before going onto win the Champion Hurdle the same season.
