The first Tuesday of November each year it is the day that the Melbourne Cup stops a nation. Unless there are non runners 24 horses line up at the start at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne for the 3200-metre race which has become a national passion.
The Melbourne Cup is without doubt Australia's premier and richest horse race witha prize fund of well over G2 million.
A Melbourne Cup tip is to ignore all the entries from the northern hemisphere as it is virtually impossible to take this race away from the Aussies as it is a handicap and any horse from Europe is weighted out of it. They also come into the race after a hard season and then there is the distance to travel and quarentine to contend with. While Dermot Weld did produce a great feat in winning this race twice with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002, while the French won with Americain in 2010.
There is one horse that will go down in Melbourne Cup history and that is Supermare Makybe Diva who won the 2005 Melbourne Cup at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse and in doing soshe is the only racehorse to have won the Melbourne Cup in three successive years. Makybe Diva's retired from racing after the running of the 2005 Melbourne Cup.
